Today is all about the essentials that you need in place to build an information and education business online. My goal is to keep this simple for you so that you don’t get overwhelmed and bombarded by all the things you COULD do. My goal is to keep it simple, get you launched and start to generate income as you move from a service provider or coach into a educational business model where you sell courses and group programs. So let’s not overcomplicate things when it comes to building an online business.
Essential Element Number – 1 Understand Your Ideal Client
I’m not talking about their age, gender and marital status like really, really KNOW them on a deeper level. What do they desire? WHat do they fear? Where do they shop? What keeps them up at night? What holds them back? What brings them joy? Do they have kids? Do they not have kids? Knowing this ideal client with great specificity and to know them deeply typically requires a little bit of research. I love to do this in Facebook groups where the ideal client is hanging out. I like to show up and ask questions and do polls and just be genuinely interested in who they are.
I often see people skip this step or think “I know this stuff” and they miss crucial research which aids them in their marketing. My advice to you is – Don’t skip this step. It is very important and you might be surprised by what you learn. In the research you will learn the exact language that use to address their problems.
Essential Element Number – 2 Define Your Product or Offer
It may seem like an obvious essential element but it is really important to define out of the gate. Ask yourself the question, what type of business do you want to have? A course business where you launch? A membership business? An ongoing evergreen group or community? Once you decide what type of business model you’d like to operate within you then can define with great specificity what is included with that.
Now some people may say now you need to create this big long sales page go through all these steps…and eventually you will either after you have done a beta or pre-launch OR if you have already sold the offer one on one and are just taking the same offer and converting it to a group program.
When you are first getting started with an online eduction business or information products business you want to presell your offer before you go through all of the steps to create a sales page and nurture sequence. For the most part, when you are launching a course or program for the first time it will typically involved a lot of personal reach out to fill up the program. So once you have the offer and have presold it once and received feedback that is the time when you then move to creating a sales page so that it can sell on auto-piolet.
Essential Element Number – 3 Building and Growing an Email List.
Are you familiar with that old Chinese saying “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The next best time to plant a tree is today.” The same goes for building an email list. BUilding an email is critical for success because it is how you can effectively communicate and convert your community into buyers. To create an email list, I recommend giving a freebie also known as a lead magnet or opt-in. This will incentivize people to sign up for your list.
Here is an example of the opt-in that we use in my business which receives a 60% opt-in rate.
Essential Element Number – 3 Show up and create macro (long form content like blogs, podcasts or youtube videos which have a life span of weeks, months or even years) content consistently. When you can show up consistently and deliver value you will differentiate yourself from the crowd. I truly believe it is something that is super duper valuable and cannot be replaced. When you’re showing up as that expert and when you’re differentiating yourself, I think it can make a huge difference in the quickness with which you can build your business.
